Swan Inn History

Bring your pooch to the pub

Built on its original Saxon site the legendary Swan Inn Fittleworth has grown from a 12th century Saxon enclosure, that offered food and lodgings to weary travellers, to the building that you see today. The earliest part of the inn that stands today are dated to 1382. The Swan has acted as a coaching inn since 1536, providing a change of horses for the Royal Postal couriers running from London to the coast.

We have been lucky over the centuries to have had many famous guests stay at the Swan, John Constable the Artist, the composers Parry and Elgar as well as the writer Rudyard Kipling. Lady Hamilton stayed here on her way to Portsmouth.

At the end of the nineteenth century the Swan gained a reputation as an artists inn, offering lodgings and fayre in return for an original painting (many of the surrounding valley). Their works can still be seen on the walls of our bar.

We are a dog friendly Pub and well behaved dogs are always welcome.

We are always trying to improve our service and facilities and therefore your comments (good or bad) will be a great help to us.

We are easy to find in Fittleworth. The Swan Inn is unusual in having a gantry over the main road with the pub sigh atop. Just click on the map to see exactly where we are and get directions.
